The luxury tourism sector is experiencing rapid growth, yet scholarship has largely concentrated on economic dimensions while neglecting sustainability, social, and ethical concerns. Despite increasing attention to the relationship between sustainability and luxury, fundamental questions remain about what sustainable luxury means given the inherent tension between exclusivity and responsible resource use, and whether consumers' sustainability concerns translate into actual purchasing decisions or involve meaningful trade-offs.
Current discourse overlooks local communities and workers, revealing gaps in understanding social inequality and how luxury tourism might support regenerative development. The sector often amplifies inequalities through exclusive enclaves that place burdens on local ecosystems and labor. Technological innovations like artificial intelligence and virtual reality further complicate this landscape by raising questions about authenticity, cultural representation, and access equity, while robust assessment methods for environmental and social impacts remain lacking.
