Description

The global sport industry has historically been shaped by theories and management approaches originating in the Global North, which often fail to account for the institutional, political, economic and cultural realities of sport in the Global South. This epistemic gap means that practitioners and policymakers in emerging economies lack conceptual tools tailored to their specific contexts, limiting the effectiveness of governance and development initiatives.

This special issue positions the Global South as a primary site of theoretical production and institutional innovation rather than merely a testing ground for Northern theories. Recent developments in cricket franchises, African football, Southeast Asian esports, and Gulf sport mega-events demonstrate distinctive governance and investment configurations that require bespoke analytical frameworks.
