This special issue addresses the fragmented nature of current decarbonisation efforts in the built environment, which typically focus on isolated phases rather than adopting a comprehensive lifecycle perspective. The editors seek research that demonstrates how building design can serve as a central mechanism for reducing emissions throughout all stages, from initial conception through construction, operation, and eventual deconstruction.

Contributions should explore holistic design approaches that integrate carbon assessment early in the design process, alongside strategies for managing buildings during operation and end-of-life phases. The issue particularly emphasizes the importance of cross-cutting enablers such as multidisciplinary collaboration, workforce development, and supportive policy and financial frameworks that facilitate the transition toward net-zero carbon buildings.
