In recent years, inclusion has been high on the agenda for many organizations, due to an increasingly diverse and dispersed workforce including globalization, migration, and prevalent hybrid work. Employee inclusion has been linked to myriad positive outcomes. Leadership attitudes and behaviors that facilitate inclusivity are therefore a topic of recent interest. Research in the past decade has examined several facets of leadership in relation to inclusion, including authentic leadership, leader-member exchange, and leader engagement. Some scholars view inclusive leadership as a distinct style or construct of leadership that represents patterns in leadership behavior that facilitate inclusion.
Despite the interest and activity in the topic, methodological and conceptual gaps and limitations persist. These limit our conceptual understanding of inclusive leadership and hinder straightforward translation to practice. The proposed special issue aims to capitalize on the opportunity to advance our understanding of this topic.
