This special issue focuses on the economic valuation of health risks and mortality in the context of environmental policy. Mortality risks dominate benefit estimates in environmental policies, but the value per statistical life literature contains significant gaps regarding how population and risk characteristics affect valuations. Similarly, nonfatal health impacts receive limited attention despite their substantial magnitude, and methodological challenges persist in synthesizing estimates across studies and applying them to new contexts.

The collection addresses recent advances in measuring individual willingness to pay for both mortality and morbidity risk reductions, improved techniques for combining and transferring results across research settings, and innovations in addressing practical questions such as how to handle co-occurring health effects and distributional equity concerns. The special issue brings together important contributions that serve as a reference for researchers and practitioners applying economic valuation methods to health and longevity improvements.
