As populations age, older adults increasingly rely on digital systems for care, finance, public services and social connection. While these systems can enhance independence and access, they also create barriers when poorly designed or when they compromise security and autonomy. This special issue examines how digital system design, implementation and governance affect older adults' ability to participate safely and independently in later life.

The special issue brings together research on gerontechnology, information systems, behavioral science and public policy. It seeks empirical, conceptual and design-oriented studies that examine how older adults interact with technology, how trust and safety are maintained, how AI can support autonomy while remaining accountable, and how organizations can make digital services more inclusive across diverse cultural and geographic contexts.
